About Tim

Tim is a highly focused Non Executive Director, advisor and personal coach,experienced in plc, family owned and SME high growth businesses  with extensive contacts in the business support sector, retail and fresh food industry.

Tim was a key member of small leadership group (with Gareth Voyle widely seen as the Best CEO/leader in the industry!) that shaped the strategy and delivered the GEEST profitable growth from c£20m to > £1,000m. High profile sales, marketing, N.B.D. and leadership roles have delivered growth and innovation through partnership with key targeted customers delivering sector leading returns. Leaving corporate life Tim then set up a fish farming business from laterally scratch to become a £3m turnover business with a revolutionary farming model with over 20 employees. Tim’s next challenge was working with a “family owned and run” Fresh Produce business of over £200m and supporting the development of the family, board and overall business.

Tim is widely recognised and respected for contributions made to the Fresh Food sector and for outstanding commitment, drive and personal integrity.

Tim moved on to a Business advisor/Non Exec/coach/consultant in 2010. Working initially with a number of clients in Food and other sectors ranging from SME’s, food start ups, turnarounds and some new sectors. Offering a range of services from Commercial/Marketing/Strategic consultancy, Coaching/Mentoring, Branding and more general business advice.

In 2012 Tim joined the government funded Growth Accelerator program, as a Growth Manager and has worked with over 500 SME’s in the E. Midlands delivering growth strategies and development plans in a vast range of businesses, in all sectors of the economy. On average these Clients have grown at four to six times (4-6 X) other SME’s ! Tim has developed a strong reputation in the business support community, financial intermediaries, LEP’s and local government.

During the last 10 years, Tim has become an established non-executive director and senior advisor to a large number of businesses, whilst delivering constant growth & change and personally coaching dozens of business leaders and middle managers in the East Midlands.

How it all began

Career Summary

Tim was an operational board member and key advisor to Gareth Voyle (CEO) delivering the industry leading GEEST growth from c£20 to c £1,000 in fresh foods over a 20 year period. Culminating in a business with 14,000 employees, 34 locations, delivering continuous growth with the most demanding retailers in the world whilst becoming No.1 in 14 out of 16 Fresh food markets.

 

Tim built and Lead the Commercial, Marketing and Development functions in GEEST which delivered this unrivalled growth and finished his tenure as M.D. of Geest Fresh Foods. Whilst Geest uniquely traded with ALL major U.K. Retailers specific strategies were put in place growing Tesco ( £20m > £600m) Sainsburys (£10m > 300m) and Waitrose (£10m > £100m) the latter personally driven and delivered by Tim.

 

Tim and his teams are also respected for delivering a No. of industry firsts including: Crusading category management in Fresh foods, Championing Cheffing and the formation of the Geest Culinary Training Academy, Collaboration in supply chain (Waitrose supplier partnership Executive), numerous pioneering market Innovations (“Steam Cuisine” ready meals, “Doy” Pouch packaging in fresh foods, licensing brands in fresh foods, the Finest range in TESCO).

 

On leaving GEEST (2005)Tim took on a very different challenge in joining the AIM listed Aquabella ,which was a distressed start up requiring a “turnaround” .A truly “hands on” role on arrival Tim was confronted with 3 fish farmers,2 support staff and “1.5 m Fish !This revolutionary business model involved introducing a southern hemisphere fish Barramundi into the U.K. using a sustainable re-circulatory farming system and for the first time Branding a new species .The morale in the business was low and serious operational and quality issues confronted Tim on arrival !

 

Once resolved New Forest Barramundi ( N.F.B.) was re-launched with a D.I.Y. “Hands on” marketing support programme using many new and untried techniques .This was hugely successful leading to Launches with TESCO ,Sainsburys ,Waitrose ,Morrisons ,M&S etc in retail ,M&J seafood’s (Brakes) + other major wholesalers and direct into Top London restaurants to obtain Leading Chef endorsement. N.F.B. featured on prime time chef programmes and became respected as “the model” for introducing new fish species. This resulted in sales growth from £100k > £3m (volume, 200kg > 5,500kg/week) and excellent national distribution.

 

Tim then moved on to the Fresh Produce (2008) industry for his next challenge, joining the 4th generation family owned business Produce World (P.W.). As development Director on the Board Tim completed a Strategic review and re-positioned P.W. with a new Vision, Strategy and identified key growth opportunities.

 

Moving into a Marketing and N.B.D. role Marketing became established in this traditionally “traded” business and 2 Brands, Bellaverde and From My Farm were launched (sales £ 5m).Marketing and Category Management were used to leverage business gains and became a key differentiator for P.W. Tim was also a driving force behind establishing the Organic Trade Board (O.T.B.) and the resultant pioneering £2m campaign “there are lots of reasons to love organic”.

Over the last 10 years Tim has been a Non Exec of the Food and Drink Forum providing superb insight into the wider food industry in the midlands and in particular the SME market.
